It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King’s birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays which have been organized under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Martin Luther king Jr. was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism for the civil rights movement. He successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday began soon after his assassination in 1968 to give him honor. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law later in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. In the beginning, some states resisted observing the holiday as, giving it alternative names or to combine it with other holidays. It was observed officially in all states for the first time in 2000.

The federal legislation challenges Americans and asked to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen action volunteer service in honor of Dr. King. The federal legislation was signed and turned into law by President Bill Clinton on August 23, 1994. Several other organizations and universities around the U.S., such as Arizona State University, Greater DC Cares participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. In honor of MLK, many Volunteer Centers, and volunteers across the country donate their time to create a difference on that day.

In the Japanese city of Hiroshima under Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, who holds a special banquet at the mayor’s office as an act to unify his city’s call for peace and spread King’s message of human rights.

In Toronto, Canada, officially recognized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day is not a paid holiday, where all government services and businesses remain open.

In 1950s and 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist. He always led non-violent protests and fought for the rights of all people including African Americans. He expected that if America and the world become a colorblind society where race would never put any impact on a person’s civil rights. He was considered one of the best orators of modern times and his speeches inspire many people to date.

Martin Luther Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929 and went to Booker T. Washington high school. Being a smart boy, he skipped two grades in high school and started taking college education at Morehouse College at the age of fifteen.

After getting degree in sociology, he got divinity degree from Crozet Seminary then got doctor’s degree in theology from Boston University.

He had one younger brother and an elder sister. He married Coretta Scott in 1953, later had four kids named, Yolanda, Martin, Dexter and Bernice.

His involvement in civil rights

Martin Luther King Jr. led the Montgomery Bus boycott as his first major civil right action. This was started when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. For this purpose Martin led a boycott of public transport system. This boycott lasted over one year. Martin was arrested; his house was bombed but at last he succeeded and segregation on Montgomery busses was ended.
