The second largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, York Minster claims a number of remarkable stained glass windows, with some dating back as far as the 13th Century. Covering 2088 sq. ft., the cathedral’s Great East Window displays mesmerising scenes from the books of Genesis and Revelation, running along the theme of the beginning and the end. The oldest of the windows in the Minster is the Five Sisters Window, the height and darkness of which make it an imposing sight.

Despite having over 200 stained glass windows, the most remarkable in the Washington National Cathedral is the ‘Space Window’. Commemorating the exploration of space and the Moon landings, the varying shades of blue and purple creates a striking image, which is out of this world. Not only is the window extraordinary to look at, it contains a fragment of lunar rock, but it is also said to be the most expensive window in the world.

The stunning spiral of stained glass windows located in the Chapel of Thanksgiving is a sight to behold and enjoyed by the religious and secular alike. Designed by Gabriel Loire, the windows get progressively brighter the closer they get to the apex, which on a sunny day creates a beautiful kaleidoscopic effect, making it clear to see why it has been dubbed the ‘glory window’.

Founded by the Ursuline nuns at the institute, the Art Nouveau style stained glass is breath-taking and reminiscent of a summer house, making the building seem more like a paradise than part of a boarding school
